Dave Thompson MSPDave and his wife Veronica have lived in Inverness for more than 30 years. Before that they lived in Stornoway for 10 years after moving from their native Lossiemouth. They have four children, five grand-children and two foster grand-children.

Dave has previously fought three parliamentary elections, one in 2005 for the Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Westminster seat and two for the Ross, Skye and Inverness West Constituency in the 2003 and 2007 Holyrood elections, coming a close second to the LibDems but was elected as a Regional List Member for the Highlands and Islands in 2007, after challenging the Returning Officer’s initial mistaken ruling that the SNP should get no seats!  This made the SNP the largest Party, enabling it  to form Scotland’s first SNP Government. After serving 4 years as a Regional Member, Dave was elected as the Member for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch in 2011, with a majority of almost 5,000.

Dave has a Constituency office in Dingwall; see contact details below.

He is a member of the Standards, Procedures and Public Appointments Committee and the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee.  He sits on Cross Party Groups for Crofting, Scots, Gaelic, Digital Participation, Palliative Care, Nuclear Disarmament, Heart Disease and Stroke and is the Convener of the Cross Party Group on Skin And Associated Rheumatic Conditions, Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Consumer Affairs and Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Religious Freedom.  He has previously been a member of the Justice Committee in 2010, the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee from 2007 to 2009 and was also a Deputy Party Whip from 2007 to 2010.

Dave was formerly a Highland Council Director, Chairman of the Chartered Management Institute Highland, Chairman of GMB/MPO Highland, Chairman of the Scottish Society of Directors of Trading Standards and an Advisor to both the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and the UK Local Authorities Co-ordinating Body on Food and Trading Standards (LACOTS).  He is currently also a Vice-President of the UK Trading Standards Institute.

Veronica ran a Bed and Breakfast and then managed Thompson's Café in Inverness so Dave also has an intimate knowledge of the trials and tribulations of small business.

Dave is a member of Scottish CND, the Church of Scotland, is a life member of An Comunn Gàidhealach and the GMB.

Dave enjoys the challenges that being a Member of the Scottish Parliament presents and is conscious to always put the interests of the people of Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch first.
